I often hear people tell me that they are afraid of putting on too much muscle. Be it through a fear of bulking up, or simply “feeling” heavier.
Ok, well let’s settle this for once and for all!
Bulking up for women is INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT, due to the low amounts of testosterone that most women have. So don’t worry about bulking up. Female body builders are amongst the most dedicated in the world and if they struggle I am sure that your average busy mum will find it even harder. (Also affective cardio can control this!)
Secondly, don’t worry about putting on weight.
MUSCLE DOES NOT WEIGH MORE THAN FAT, but it is less dense!
Below is a picture of 5lb’s of muscle, and 5lb’s of fat. As you can see, THEY BOTH WEIGH 5lb’s!
The big difference is that muscle takes up LESS SPACE than fat AND burns MORE CALORIES. (Up to 35 calories a day more, per pound)
So if you step on the scales and don’t see a difference in weight, but you do feel slimmer around the waist or thighs, celebrate! You have just gained muscle, and are becoming a lean mean fat burning machine!

Hi Jon,
it should say muscle is more dense. I should know being a Bio teacher! Density equals mass/volume. Therefore, same mass 5lbs but less space i.e less volume, means Density equals more.
