Difficulty Unwinding in the Evenings?

Difficulty Unwinding in the Evenings?

If you are interested in losing weight or increasing your fitness then quality downtime is an absolute must. Not only does your body burn more fat when it is relaxed but it also repairs muscle quicker, so if you are struggling to unwind at the end of a busy day follow the following checklist to help you stay fresh for the challenges ahead.

Chill-out Checkpoint 1 -Plan tomorrow TODAY

If you find it difficult to switch off from work, set aside a few moments at the end of the day and simply write down the FIVE most important things you have to do tomorrow in priority sequence. Not only does this help you prioritize things and feel in control, it also signals that you have finished your work for today and can now leave the office! Keep reading →

Does Muscle Weigh More Than Fat?

I often hear people tell me that they are afraid of putting on too much muscle. Be it through a fear of bulking up, or simply “feeling” heavier.

Ok, well let’s settle this for once and for all!

Bulking up for women is INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT, due to the low amounts of testosterone that most women have. So don’t worry about bulking up. Female body builders are amongst the most dedicated in the world and if they struggle I am sure that your average busy mum will find it even harder. (Also affective cardio can control this!)

Secondly, don’t worry about putting on weight.

MUSCLE DOES NOT WEIGH MORE THAN FAT, but it is less dense!

Below is a picture of 5lb’s of muscle, and 5lb’s of fat. As you can see, THEY BOTH WEIGH 5lb’s!

The big difference is that muscle takes up LESS SPACE than fat AND burns MORE CALORIES. (Up to 35 calories a day more, per pound)

So if you step on the scales and don’t see a difference in weight, but you do feel slimmer around the waist or thighs, celebrate! You have just gained muscle, and are becoming a lean mean fat burning machine!

Dog Walkers Get More Exercise Than Gym Goers

A recent article published in the Telegraph Online caught my eye by highlighting the fact that Dog walkers get more exercise than gym goers!

Now, as a dog owner myself, I want to fully endorse this method of exercise as SUPERIOR to the conventional squats and lunges that many people do in the gym. In fact this type of exercise is the way forward in SO many aspects that I can’t believe we have an obesity epidemic at all!

I mean, look at the evidence.

You increase you heart rate (moderately) over five times a week, which has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease by 50%

You occasionally have to bend down to pick up dog poo which, if done correctly (big if…), will mobilise the hip joint and can contribute to a reduction in lower back pain.

You get fresh air, and spend some time outside, reducing stress hormone levels which have been linked to weight gain, adrenal disfunction and mental illness.

What more could you want from your exercise program?

Not much, with a correct nutritional programme and a bit of help with your poo picking up technique you could even get quite good results from this exercise regime.

So what is the problem????

A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T HAVE 8 HOURS A WEEK TO EXERCISE!!!!

For many of my clients, with the demands of a social life, family, AND work they simply DON’T WANT to spend eight hours walking the dog!

They have 2/3 hours MAX to tone up, strip fat AND give their heart a good workout.

They need to get the absolute maximum out of that hour, both mentally, socially and physically, in order to be able to get back to their families, work commitments and friends in the best physical shape they can be in.

If your goals are to control weight gain or strip body fat, and you only have two/three hours then vigorous strength training programs are DEFINITELY the most effective method for you.

That is why we market ourselves to BUSY people.

People that simply DON’T have eight hours a day to exercise.

Believe me, I rate dog walking very highly as a form of exercise but don’t be fooled by the headlines. All exercise minutes are certainly NOT equal!

Diet vs Exercise

Useful video to look at for all of you that feel you DESERVE a treat after going out for a jog.

Unfortunately, as this video highlights YOU CAN’T OUT TRAIN A BAD DIET!

Important note for busy people

Whilst jogging and cardio are very effective for improving the strength of your heart and general health, they are NOT the most efficient way to burn body fat.

(If you are low on time and want to get back in shape, Nutrition comes first and Strength training is always second, Jogging is way down in fifth!)

That’s why we keep running to a minimum on our weight loss programmes!

Enjoy…
